It can be very simple to express gratitude, but sometimes we all need reminders on how to show others that we are grateful for the things in our lives.  Here are some expressing gratitude examples specifically for kids and teenagers.
Our youth want to find joy, but sometimes it is easy for them to get sucked into all the negativity around them, and only focus on themselves.  These simple acts of gratitude can help them to find the positivity in their own lives, and help them to feel joy.
These examples below are very simple things that your youth can try that can make a huge impact on their lives. One of my favorite sayings is a quote from the Book of Mormon: “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” (Alma 37:6)  Little efforts, made daily, can make a huge difference.
This post is all about expressing gratitude examples for kids and teens.

1. Every Day Tell Someone You are Grateful for Them

For the month of November, make it a goal to tell someone every single day that you are grateful for them.  If you want, dig even deeper and tell them one reason that you are grateful to have them in your life.  You will help that person to feel loved, while also feel good about yourself for the service you have done and the gratitude you have shown.

2. Volunteer to Help Someone

Do you know of anyone who could use help with something? For the month of November, listen to other people’s needs and you are sure to find one thing that you can do to help someone in need.

3. Make a Gratitude Tree

This is a fun activity to do on Thanksgiving, or throughout the entire month of November.  Cut out a paper tree, draw one on a piece of paper, or use our free printable found HERE. Cut out a bunch of paper leaves.  You can do this on your own, or with a group of friends, or as a family.  Invite others to join you in writing things you are grateful for each day, on the leaves, and sticking them to the tree.

4. Write Gratitude Letters

A simple way to show gratitude is to write letters to any one you are grateful for.  This could be your friends, teachers, coaches, the bus driver, etc.  Write one letter a day, or a week.  Or take a quiet Sunday and write a bunch of letters.  Check out THIS post for tips on writing a “thank you” note.

5. Get to Know Someone New

Has anyone new moved into your neighborhood, church, or school?  Or is there someone at school that you haven’t met yet?  Take the time to introduce yourself to someone knew, and get to know them.  Ask them questions about themselves.  Bring them a treat, if you want.  Help that person to feel like they belong.

6. Smile at Everyone You See Today

A simple way to show gratitude is to appreciate the people around you.  Smile at everyone you see.  Maybe someone really needs a smile that day, and you can help make the world a better place just by smiling.

7. Be a Good Listener for a Friend Today

This is something that doesn’t always come naturally, but be a good listener for a friend.  When someone is talking, look at them, and listen to what they are trying to tell you.  You don’t need to try and correct them, or solve any issues they might be going through.  Just acknowledge what they are saying, give them a hug, if needed, and tell them that you are sorry for what they are going through. Later, follow up with them to see how they are doing.

8. Be extra kind and thoughtful to those around you today.

Make it a goal for one day, to be extra kind to everyone around you.  Leave out any mean comments, or negativity.  Say nice things to and about others.  Be thoughtful as well.  If you notice someone around you needs help with something, then help them.

9. Cook Dinner for Your Family

Get into the kitchen and practice your baking skills, by making a delicious dinner for your family, to show your love for them.

10. Call a Grandparent

Take a few minutes to call a grandparent or other family member, such as a cousin, just to say hi. See how they are doing, and what they have been up to.

11. Spend Quality Time with Siblings

My parents also told me that friends would come and go, but your siblings would be with your forever, and that is definitely true!  Even though most of my siblings live in different states, we still text all the time, and get together as often as we can.  Build that relationship with your siblings while you are young.   Bake together, play a game together, or do a puzzle together. There are so many options of things you can do to build your relationship with your siblings.

12. Share Ten Things You’re Grateful For

Take some time this month, to share 10 things you are grateful for, with your family members at the dinner table.  You can do this every night, and cut it down to three things, or do it once, maybe on Thanksgiving Day.

13. Donate to a Food Pantry

Collect canned goods and take it to a food pantry, or volunteer your time at a food pantry.  They are typically always looking for volunteers to help organize food items.

14. Get to know a Veteran

Get to know a local veteran and thank them for their service to the country.  If you are not sure how to do this, ask your parents for help on finding a veteran.

15. Post Something You are Grateful for Each Day

For the month of November, post one thing you are grateful for on a social media platform each day. There is a lot of negativity on social media, so add some positivity to other’s feeds.

16. Show Gratitude for Your Body

Eat healthy foods, exercise, drink water, and get good sleep this month, to show appreciate for your body.  For little kids, listen to THIS cute little book on gratitude for our bodies. For teenagers, think positive thoughts about your body, and only speak kind words about your body.

A gratitude journal is a simple journal where you write 1-3 things every day that you are grateful for.  It doesn’t take long, and it is nice to go back and read the posts when you are feeling down.  Check out THIS post on keeping a gratitude journal, and journal prompts for self love.

21. Donate Your Unwanted Items

Most people have a lot of things that they no longer use or need.  Show your gratitude for the things that you have, but donating your clothes, toys, and books to a friend or second hand store, who maybe doesn’t have as much as you do.  It is so much easier to get rid of things, when you know it is going to be loved by someone else.

22. Take Some Apple Cider to a Friend

Do you know someone who is struggling?  Take them a little treat, such as apple cider, to let them know you care.

23. Give a Thoughtful Gift to a Special Person

Is there someone that you are grateful for?  Give them a little gift to show your appreciation.  If you don’t want to spend money, you can make or draw something.

24. Make Sure Everyone Feels Included at School

Pick a day and go out of your way to make sure everyone around you feels included.

25. Paint Gratitude Rocks

A fun activity for any age is to paint rocks and leave them around the neighborhood.  You can write things on them, and draw pictures, for others to enjoy.

Go spend some time outside just looking at all the beauty around you.  Admire the plants, animals, skies, and waters.

27. Bake Cookies for a Friend

Bake cookies for someone with a note telling them why you are grateful for them.

29. Do one activity from THIS website.

There are so many adorable activities from THIS website that will help you express your gratitude.  There are crafts, and games, and journal prompts, and many more fun expressing gratitude examples.

30. Say a Gratitude Prayer

Try saying a prayer where you don’t ask for anything at all.  Instead, just think of all the things you are grateful for.  Another wonderful idea, before you say a family prayer, to simply ask “Who should we pray for?” and then every one can recommend suggestions of people who could use your prayers.  It is a humbling, and beautiful way to express your love and gratitude for the people in your lives.
