This article explains 17 ways to minister by serving others in February.  As I have been pondering ministering, I have realized that ministering is all about love.  It is learning to love as the Savior did so that we may bless the lives of others.  As we learn to serve, we learn to love, and February is a great time to learn to serve and love.  So, let’s explore some fun ideas to help us touch the lives of others.

I love this quote by Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, “Do you love the lord?  Spend time with Him.  Meditate on His words.  Take His yoke upon you. Seek to understand and obey. When Jesus gave His disciples a new commandment to ‘love one another; as I have loved you,’ He gave to them the grand key to happiness in this life and glory in the next.   …Often, the greatest manifestations of love are the simple acts of kindness and caring we extend to those we meet along the path of life.”  Here is a cute handout from Polka Dot Creations, that you can give to those you minister to.

Finding time for someone is always the best way to connect and show people you truly care for them.  People tend to feel lonely, tired, and miserable in February, especially on Valentine’s Day.   Winter has been long, and they are ready for spring, to get outside again.  Help people feel loved and needed during this short month that is focused on love.  Find people who might feel lonely.

1. Serving Others by Celebrating Groundhog’s Day

Groundhog’s Day is a fun day at the beginning of February that you could make into a day of ministering and enjoying time with a friend.  Maybe you could enjoy hot chocolate and donuts with a friend while you wait for the news of whether the groundhog saw his shadow or not.

2. Watch a Movie with Friends

Another fun thing to do is get a bunch of friends together.  Have a movie night, complete with popcorn and snacks.  You could watch Groundhog Day, the movie, together.   If the Groundhog Day movies isn’t your cup of tea, find another fun movie to help clear away the winter blues.  You could even find a fun chick flick for Valentines Day.   Movie nights are fun, relaxing, healing and help build friendships and relationships.

3. Heart Attack Someone’s Door

One of my kids favorites activities on Valentines is to “Heart Attack” someone’s front door.  This activity provides two parts of service that kids and teenager, especially, enjoy.  First, they get to cut out hearts and decorate them with fun saying or pictures.  Next the children get to sneak around to different houses and decorate their doors with their designs.  The best part is trying not to get caught after you ring the doorbell. This activity is meaningful for both the giver and the receiver.

4. Serving Others by Delivering Flowers

Flowers are a great way to brighten up a lonely day, especially after a long brown winter.  There are many people who have lost loved ones who don’t receive flowers anymore.  I bet if you look around you can find several people who fit this category.  Think about buying several bunches of flowers or a dozen roses and take a rose to 12 different people.  You can touch the life of 12 people with one little idea.

5. Hug in a Jar

Everyone could use a hug.  I thought this fun little candle would be a fun gift to remind those you love that you love them.  Don’t forget to give them a huge bear hug at the time you deliver the candle. So that every time they light a candle, they can feel the warmth of your hug.

6. Serving Others by Delivering Chocolate

Do I need to say anything else?  Who doesn’t like receiving chocolate?  These cute little kisses have fun little sayings on the bottom.

7. Send Someone Conversation Hearts

Which leads me to another fun Valentines tradition—Conversation hearts.  I always thought it would be fun to try and write a cute note with conversations hearts.  This would be a fun activity for children to do for a special someone.

8. Gift Someone Decor

This cute little decoration would brighten up anyone’s days.  It’s always great to be reminded that you are loved.

9. Serving Others by Hosting a Paint Night

A fun way to minister to others would be to take a paint class together or invite them over for a paint night with you.  I know we made friends with a lady who painted watercolors.  She invited my daughter to come, and she taught her how to paint.  It was fun for both of us to learn some techniques together.  We never did finish those paintings with her, but it has given us the courage to try other painting projects.  It was fun and memorable for us.  The paint by number kit below would be awesome.

10. Bake a Treat with Someone

Another fun activity that could be done together would be to bake a treat to eat together or even give to someone else.  You could learn to make a cheesecake together by find someone who would be willing to teach you.  You could even ask them to teach you one of their favorite treats.  Something I would like to learn is how to make macaron cookies.  One of my favorite experiences was learning to make bread from an 85-year-old lady I had the privilege to minister to.  There are so many possibilities turn on that stove and learn together.

11. Serving Others by Hosting a Treat Night

Another idea along the lines of baking is to gather those you minister to and host a night of yummy treats.  You can either make them all yourself or have people make different treats to bring.  Use Valentines Day as a theme for the desserts that are made.  You can enjoy a night of friendship, love, and laughter.  To make the night more special bag up some of those treats and take them to people who couldn’t make it or maybe need extra love this time of year.

12. Celebrate National Internet Friends Day

February 13 is Internet Friends Day. Post a picture of the two of you together and write what you love about them.  I feel like sending them a heartfelt email for their eyes only would go a long way in showing them you care.  It would be an easy activity that wouldn’t cost anything but time.  It would be so meaningful to the receiver.  Maybe make a challenge to send an email every day to someone you love in the month of February.

13. Serving Others with a Pancake Day

February 13 is also pancake day.  Have a pancake breakfast at your home.  Again, invite some friends and enjoy a few moments eating pancakes and enjoying the moments together.

14. Make a Craft with Someone

Another fun project to incorporate with children would be to make fun Valentine cards for a nursing home, grandparents, or anyone you minister to.  You only need to hand your children half a piece of paper, hearts and markers and they will creative beautiful cards than you could pair with a simple treat the children can make.  Now you have taught your children how to serve and raised the spirits of those who receive these amazing cards.

15. Celebrate Presidents Day with Someone

This is also a month of Presidents Day and a few of the President’s birthdays.  How about making or buying a cherry pie to celebrate. It can be shared or taken to someone you love. I also found this yummy Cinnamon Cherry Cobbler recipe that would be so easy to make.  It is only 2 ingredients.

16. Deliver a Treat to Someone

I love these Valentine Pretzel Treats; they are so easy to make.  They only take 3 ingredients and about 10 minutes to make. They could be made with M&M’s or conversation hearts on top.  I have also seen them made with kisses.    They would be awesome to put with one of the quotes in the next section of things to do for those you minister to.

17. Make a Card for Someone

One my favorite things to do for my friends is to make a card with a quote and a little treat to go along with it.  Here are some examples of some great quotes that can be used for the month of February:

“If there ever comes a day where we can’t be together, keep me in your heart. I’ll stay there forever.” -Winnie the Pooh

“Friends are the family you choose.” -Jess C. Scott

“A friend is one of the best things you can be and the greatest things you can have.” -Sarah Valdez

“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” -Walter Winchell

“Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” -Mother Teresa

“We weren’t sisters [or brothers] by birth, but we knew from the start fate brought us together to be sisters [or brothers] by heart.” -Unknown

“If I know what love is, it is because of you.” -Hermann Hesse

Remember when you love someone it is easier to minister to them.  It isn’t a chore to serve them, but it becomes a pleasure.  Spending time with them becomes relaxing, healing, and full of friendship.  You don’t have to do big, grand, expensive things to touch a person’s life.  Even the small things are appreciated.  People just want to feel loved and needed.  Let’s Serve!
