Every month, as I write articles on ministering LDS and caring for the needs of others, I become more aware of the needs around me. I am seeing more and more how just little things can change someone’s life. A prayer, a compliment, a text, a card, a smile, and most importantly, a little time, can change a person’s outlook on life.
March is a fun month because it is starting to get warm, and the evidence of spring is beginning to pop up. St. Patrick’s Day leads us to notice the green in the world. As we see the new growth in the trees and new life that come into the world, we can see change in our lives as well. Springtime gives us new hope.
We can make small changes in our lives as well during this time of year. I feel that service is the best way to make changes in ourselves. It helps us to not focus on our own problems, but to look outside of ourselves and help others. I love 1 Thessalonians 5:14 which says, “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.” Basically, help and serve other’s the best we can.
This article will focus on ministering LDS ideas for the month of March.
So here are some fun ways to serve and minister in the Month of March:
1. Make Peanut Butter Bars for Someone
March 1 is national Peanut Butter Lover’s Day. Make a batch of Peanut butter bars or even cookies and enjoy them with a friend. You can even give them to anyone you think could use a ray of sunshine in their life. We love the Peanut Butter Quickies recipe. You can make them into balls or add chocolate on top and make them into a bar.
2. Give a Book to Someone
Its also National Read Across America. This would be a great time to give one of your favorite books to a friend, or start up a book club for a group of friends. If you have a friend with some kids, it would be fun to go to their home and read some books with them. Bring along some simple costumes and act out one of the books that you bring.
This looks like a fun book to read with children.
3. Hug Someone
National hug day is observed in March. This is such a simple ministering LDS idea. Everyone loves a hug because it means that you have spend time with them. Wouldn’t someone love it, if you came to their home with no objective but to give them a hug. If you really need a fun treat to take along take along a package of Hershey Hugs.
4. Give Someone Some Cereal
My husband’s favorite day in March is National Cereal Day. He would eat cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So take your favorite box of cereal and enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a snack with a friend.
5. Host a “Pi” Night
March 14 is one of my families favorite days. It’s Pi day! You could host a “Pi” Night for some friends or those you minister to. Make a bunch of pies or have everyone bring their favorite pie to share. You could also take mini pies to those who you feel need an extra little lift.
6. Give out Oreos, or Toothbrushes
As I was looking up Holidays in the Month of March it said that National Dentist’s Day was the same say as National Oreo Cookie Day. How does that work? So go ahead and grab some Oreo cookies to take to your friends or even your dentists. I guess you could also put a toothbrush with that little gift.
7. Take Dinner to Someone
Taking dinner to someone is always an easy way to speak to someone’s heart. On National meatball day, it would be fun to take an easy meal of meatballs, rice, and a salad to a friend. My families favorite is Raspberry chipotle sauce over meatballs.
8. Help Someone Plant a Flower
March is a time when we start thinking about Spring and flowers. Take the time to help someone plant a flower or even send them flowers to welcome in Springtime. Such a simple ministering LDS idea.
9. Deliver Something for St Patrick’s Day
Maybe it’s because I love green, but I love St. Patrick’s Day. It is such an easy day to put something together that is green. Take them some green socks, hats, earrings, or bracelets that they could wear. You could even just take them some stickers, so they don’t get pinched.
10. Host a Green Dinner
Another fun thing to do is invite a friend over for a green dinner, where everything is green. We have been known to dye mashed potatoes, juice, pancake mix and frosting green for this special event. We have also served green jello, green beans, and salad. Be creative. Kids love this, so invite someone with children. They will be talking about it for days and if you use enough green food coloring then their lips will also show off the party the next day.
11. Help Someone Create a Leprechaun Trap
One year we spent St. Patrick’s Day with my brother, and he taught my children how to trap a leprechaun. He set up a trap using a card box and we left it on our porch for a while. Then when the kids were distracted, he left some chocolate coins under the box. My kids loved it. It would be a fun thing to share with some young kids that you know. Maybe make them a leprechaun catching kit and have them put it out on St. Patrick’s Day. Then take some green treats or gold coins that can be left in the trap. I also found this DIY trap that the kids could make themselves.
12. Make up a Holiday for Someone
March 26 is “Make Up Your Holiday” Day. This could be so much fun! Think of the person you are trying to serve. If they like sports, maybe you could throw a fun sport theme party. Maybe they have a specific hobby, collection, or food that you could celebrate for them. You could even call it “Celebrate my Best Friend” Day or insert their name in place of Best Friend. Shower them with things they love or write a poem for them. Think of Any way you can to celebrate them. Check out these adorable boxes of thoughtful sayings below.
13. Give a Friend Some Cat Related
Do you have a cat lover you would like to do something for. Well March 28 is “Respect your Cat” Day. Bring your friend some cat toys, cat food, a cat puzzle, calendar or some cute cat socks. Again, the sky is the limit of what you can do to show your respect for their cat.
14. Send a Card
We are all so busy, so if you need something simple, try sending cards of appreciation or words of encouragement. Just knowing that someone is thinking about them can make their day. It is appreciated that someone thought enough to send a card. Some days that can mean more than coming over to the house, plus you can read their words over and over. This is a great ministering LDS idea that is simple, but will have a huge impact on someone.
15. Send Someone a Quote
Here are a couple of quotes that you could use in a card, or text, or put with any treat you may want to take to someone you are ministering to.
“You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice.” -Bob Marley
“Never iron a four-leaf clover, because you don’t want to press your luck.” –Irish Proverb
“May the blessings of each day be the blessings you need the most.”—Irish Blessing
“May your troubles be less and your blessing be more. And nothing but happiness, Come through your door.”—Irish blessing. Check out this FREE printable HERE.
Or Poem
Sometimes it is not easy to serve others, especially when we are going thru our own trials. When struggle hit us, we should reach outside of issues and serve someone else. The joy that comes from serving is enough to lift our spirits during hard times. I love this quote by Joel Osteen “Make up your mind that no matter what comes your way, no matter how difficult, no matter how unfair, you will do more than simply survive. You will thrive in spite of it.” I know when things get tough for me, I am constantly saying to myself, “You can do hard things.”
I also love this poem, that my mother told me when I was a teenager. It helped me to realize that I have been given so much and all the Savior asks of me is to help others.
“Giving is living,” the angel said,
“Go feed the poor, sweet charity’s bread.
“And must I keep giving again and again?’
My selfish and querulous question rang.
“Oh, no,” said the angel; his eyes pierced me through.
“Just give, ’till the Savior stops giving to you.
Most of these ideas are incredibly simple. You don’t have to do something big to serve. Showing up is the best service anyways. Just be creative, keep it simple, and let’s serve!
